Board Roles

Board access is per-board, not global — being part of your organization doesn’t automatically give you access to any particular board. Your role on a board determines what you can do there, and that role is enforced consistently everywhere in the app, not just in what buttons you see.

The four roles

Ranked highest to lowest capability:
  • Owner — full control of the board: manage members, manage lanes, delete cards, transfer ownership. Whoever creates a board is its owner by default, and an owner can’t be removed except by transferring ownership to someone else first.
  • Editor — can do almost everything an owner can with cards and lanes (create, edit, move, delete, pass or hand off cards to another board, manage templates), but can’t manage board membership or transfer ownership.
  • Creator — can create cards and edit the ones assigned to them, but can’t edit other people’s cards, delete cards, or manage the board.
  • Viewer — read-only, and shown in the interface as “Guest.” If you’re setting someone’s role and want them to only be able to look around, this is the option to choose.
A global Admin automatically has owner-level access on every board, whether or not they’re a listed member.

One thing worth knowing

You can be an Editor on one board and have no access — or only Viewer/Guest access — on another. Your role is set per board, not attached to you as a person. If something you’d expect to be able to do isn’t working, check your role on that specific board first.
